Good morning! This latest issue is full of numbers, especially with the wrap up China’s most recent Single’s Day and the mobile shopping numbers in the US. Also check out Amazon’s new ads for the next NFL Black Friday game.
Singles Day 2023 gets mixed results
❓️ What it is: Singles Day is celebrated in China on Nov 11 every year. It actually got its name so that single people can buy themselves gifts, the opposite of Valentine’s Day. It’s one of the biggest shopping days because of its massive discounts.
📉 Still slow: In 2023, the total value growth actually slowed (2% vs 2.9% in 2022), amounting to $156.4 billion due to COVID and other festivals like 618.
There were also individual reports of companies that were released:
🏷️ 40-50% discounts are more common in general
📱 Apple saw a decline (4% YoY) with competition from Huawei and Xiaomi
🖥️ TMall got 13.7 million in sales and 800 million visitors
📦️ JD.com reported that 20,000 brands tripled their transaction volume
🏆️ Best sellers: Bain stated that buyers focused on necessities like toiletries, instant noodles, pet food compared to more expensive items like appliances and furniture.
Amazon’s NFL ads could change marketing
📆 Black Friday Games: Amazon is making big moves in advertising after getting the rights to NFL’s upcoming Black Friday game. The ads will have interactive banners, QR codes for products and more CTA that can boost viewer engagement. Amazon will charge $880,000 for 30 seconds which is double the usual rate.
🛍️ Ad details: Amazon has audience based offerings where different products are shown to different demographics. Bose, for example, has different product ads depending if the viewer is a Prime or non-Prime member. Some the the ad buyers include Google, Columbia Sportswear, Bose, Carnival Cruises, and Hasbro.
According to Ad Age, Bose will show three different ads using Amazon’s ad technology. One version has been created specifically for non-Prime members, while the other two will be shown to Prime members, displaying different products based on their past Amazon shopping behaviors.

Mobile shopping dominates Thanksgiving in the US
🛒 Big business: US shoppers spent $5.6 billion online, up 5.5% from the previous year and double from 2017 according to Adobe Analytics. This was led by
“Mobile shopping hit an all-time high, as shoppers took to their smartphones to get the best deals during holiday gatherings, further solidifying mobile’s growing importance in e-commerce,”
