Amazon comes to South Africa - without Prime?
South Africans can finally shop on Amazon. Earlier this month, Amazon launched its online marketplace in the country marking its first.
There's a bit of a twist, though. Unlike its usual approach, Amazon is launching in South Africa without its famous Prime membership program.
This means no access to Prime Video, free shipping on a bunch of items, or other perks that make Prime users loyal Amazon shoppers.
So, how will Amazon attract customers without Prime? Here's their plan:
They'll offer a wide selection of products, including both international brands and locally-made goods, across 20 categories.
Amazon will offer same day or next day delivery for many items.
They also feature 3000 pick up points
To make up for the lack of Prime, Amazon will give free delivery on your first order and all subsequent orders over $27.
Amazon is entering a $3 billion South African ecommerce market already crowded with local players like Takealot and Superbalist.
As of the moment, there is no word on when Amazon will implement Prime to its South African market.
